My proposal has to deal with saving electricity by not having lights in unneeded places, and when the lights are not in use making sure the lights are shut off.
Studies have shown on other schools that lighting makes up for 50 percent of the electricity bill. There is no reason to have a light on for more than one minute in an empty room. One thing to try is form a student patrol group to make sure that all the light are shut off in rooms if they are empty. Something to do is make some sort of a penalty for the teachers if there light are on when no one is in the room. Another thing to do is remove light fixtures from near windows, they are not needed by a window because there is enough light coming in from outside. Studies show that students work better under natural light anyways. Another way to save energy is to use energy efficient light bulbs. Although that doesn’t mean that you can leave the lights on.
The cost of this would have to be figured by talking to the school and finding out what the cost of the electricity bill is now, and trying to figure how much it could possible be lowered by trying just one of these steps if not all of them. All the other schools that have tried just one of these steps have seen a result in a lower electricity bill.
