My proposal is to take one Wednesday out of the month and have a waste free lunch. Do you know what a waste free lunch is? A waste free lunch program is a process of educating students, parents, and school staff about where our trash ends up and how we can reduce the amount of trash we generate. Waste-free lunch programs favor the use of reusable food containers, drink containers, utensils, and napkins.
If your entire school has a waste-free lunch one Wednesday of the month you will save $26.50 per student each year. Preston would save $8,162 a year or more if we had one Wednesday of the month be waste free. East Central would save approximately $8,000 or more if they had one Wednesday of the month be waste free.
Much of the trash we generate come from the packaging on the food we buy, and lunch foods are no exception. It has been estimated that on average a school-age child using a disposable lunch generate 67 pounds of waste per school year. Preston and East Central generate 18,760 pounds of lunch waste each year.
To have waste free Wednesday lunches would not cost anything. You would be saving money not spending money. You don't need any materials for this project. You don't have to pay for any materials either.
