Composting
My proposal for our schools to reduce environmental output is to start composting most of our waste products that we put into our landfills. We would want to focus on 1 of the 3 major composting products. We would focus on the food wastes, the other 2 are yard trimmings and manures.
Cost savings will result-Not paying for waste to be taken to landfills. Also using the compost as fertilizers around the schools.
Helps regenerate poor soils. The composting process encourages beneficial micro-organisms (bacteria and fungi) which in turn break down organic matter to create humus. Humus is a rich nutrient-filled material, it increases the nutrient content in soils and helps soils retain moisture.
Prevents pollution-Composting organic materials that have been diverted from landfills ultimately avoids the production of methane and leached formulation in the landfills.
Using compost offers economic benefits-Using compost can reduce the need for water, fertilizers, and pesticides.
COST OF PROJECT-Less than $100
Materials needed-Composting containers, dead leaves and grass clippings, and a shaded area near a water source(water hydrant).
Cost of materials-Less then $100
