Reduction of Paper Proposal
Do you realize how much paper we waste each day? Did you know by saving 17 trees, you are helping the earth absorb 250 lbs of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere? That is about 29,000 2-Liter bottles! In 2007-2008, Preston Schools alone spent over $3,000 in paper and more than $5,000 for printing. The school expects to spend that much if not more this school year. Therefore I proposal Preston Schools reduce its usage of paper to help save money and the environment.
Here are some possible ways that the school can make this happen. First, when teachers and student have to use paper, make sure they utilize both sides of the paper. This could be done by recycling returned papers for additional assignments. I realize younger Elementary students need to use paper in order to learn how to read and write so by utilizing both sides, paper usage can be reduce. Second would be having teachers put their lessons on the computer by scanning or setting up templates and students could then type in answers on the template and resave for teachers to correct. This way a teacher could take home a laptop to access assignments verses notebooks or piles of messy papers. Third, a Northeast School teacher gave me the idea of using little marker boards to help teach a lesson. The little marker boards allow students to avoid using excess paper by writing down their answers on the boards. This idea helps the class become more involved in the lesson or for a teacher giving a quick pop quiz. The boards and markers are fairly inexpensive and could be purchased by the student or the school. Suitable boards range in prices from $3-$5. The dry erase markers and erasers come in a set of 6 and only cost $3 which I think is very reasonable.
Preston Schools could easily reduce their paper usage by implementing my suggestions above. Paper and printing costs will decrease and the school will be able to save money. The school is also helping the environment saving trees. This school can make a difference. It may be a small percent, but anything is huge in today’s world. I would really like you to consider this proposal because as environmental concerns and costs continue to plague us, this is an area where we can be more responsible and make a conscious effort to make hat difference.
